California's proposed overhaul of Proposition 65 aims to streamline the information on hazardous chemicals, making it more straightforward for consumers to understand the risks. This proposal could lead to more informed decisions by Californians when purchasing products.
🐟 Tribal petition wins EPA backing for salmon safety
The EPA's action to protect salmon from the harmful tire chemical 6PPD, which has been used in motor vehicle tires for more than six decades to make them more durable. It's a critical effort to preserve not just the salmon, which are significant culturally and economically, but also the broader ecosystem.
💧 Public feedback on PFAS restrictions now public
ECHA has published all 5,642 contributions received from the public to the proposal to restrict per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the EEA. The feedback is currently being evaluated by ECHA’s scientific committees for Risk Assessment and for Socio-Economic Analysis.
🚨 EPA seeks total ban on TCE use
The proposed ban on trichloroethylene by the EPA marks a significant pivot towards more stringent regulation of chemicals deemed hazardous to health. If enacted, it would be a landmark decision, setting a precedent for future actions against high-risk substances.
🇹🇷 Turkey proposes extension for chemical registrations
According to Chemical Watch, which cites industry insiders, Turkish officials are contemplating a postponement of the current KKDIK registration deadline, which is set for the end of December 2023.
Should the proposal be sanctioned, the new deadlines are expected to be:
- December 2025 for substances manufactured or imported over 1,000 tonnes per year, as well as for carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reprotoxic (CMR) substances of at least one tonne per year, and for substances highly toxic to aquatic environments at quantities of 100 tonnes or more per year.
- December 2026 for substances in the 100-1,000 tonnes per year bracket.
- December 2027 for substances in the 1-100 tonnes per year range.
This information remains tentative, with further details anticipated to be released.
📊 Additional data sought by POPs review committee
The Secretariat of the Stockholm Convention is requesting submissions of information on chlorinated paraffins, long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids, and chlorpyrifos, with deadlines ranging from 1 December 2023 to 18 January 2024. Detailed forms for submission and further instructions are provided by the Secretariat, with all information to be sent to the designated email address.
